The doctors of Doctors Eye Institute are proud to honor Dr. Melvyn M. Koby in his fortieth year of distinguished service in the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Koby grew up in Louisville where he graduated from Atherton High school on 1956. He often worked as a clerk in his father's drug store, Koby Drug Company, at 2nd and Chestnut.
After earning a BA in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, Dr Koby attended University of Louisville Medical School where he became intrigued by the function and design of the human eye. He interned at Barnes Hospital, at Washington University, In St. Louis. After two years in Internal Medicine training at Barnes Hospital he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam War. He then returned to the prestigious Barnes Hospital to complete his Ophthalmology residency in 1971.
Dr. Koby started his practice in August 1971 in the Heyburn Building at Fourth and Broadway. Three years later Dr. David Karp finished his residency and started practicing with him and would later become his partner. In 1976 they opened Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute in the Suburban Medical Plaza. In 1986 they move the practice to their current location in the DuPont Surgery Center in DuPont Circle.
As well as practicing his specialty, he was a pioneer and innovator in Ophthalmology in the Louisville area. Dr. Koby started doing Radial Keratotomy, the predecessor to LASIK, and spent time in Russia with its inventor, Professor Svyatoslav Fyodorov. He was the first to bring that technology back to Louisville in the early 1980's.
Dr Koby at Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute was the first Ophthalmologist in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to insert an intraocular lens during cataract surgery, which is the procedure that is done today.
We salute Dr. Melvyn M. Koby on his Fortieth Anniversary of practicing Ophthalmology both as an eminent physician and a notable contributor in the field of Ophthalmology.

Jennifer prides herself on being able to listen to her patients and determine exactly what they want and need. Additionally, she pledges to provide a well run optical department that will also be thought of as our patient education center. We invite you to visit our newly redesigned optical department. We have renamed it the "Optical Education Center" because we want you to think of it as the place where you can learn about exciting innovations in eyewear that can greatly improve your visual experience.
New advances in lens technology now allow patients who used to wear thin lenses to enjoy even lighter, even thinner lenses. These recently developed ultra high index lenses are more flattering and more comfortable.
You will also discover the newest lens coatings that are the absolute best for reducing glare, resisting scratching, eliminating indirect reflection from water or snow and protecting from ultraviolet light.
Additionally you will find that recent improvements in no-line, multifocal lenses provide the nearest to natural vision by creating a sense of constant clarity at all viewing distances.
Come in and let us explain all the new options you now have for maximizing your eyewear so you will see the best you can see.

If we were going to open a second location for Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute, where do you think it should be? What area of Louisville?
We value your opinion, so let us know. It only takes a few seconds. You don't have to give us your name. Just click here.

Although the advantages to using electronic medical records (EMR) are numerous to our doctors staff, there are also many positive benefits for you, our patient, as well.
Since our receptionists have your medical records at their fingertips when you call, we get an instant view of your insurance information, which one of the doctors you see, when you were last seen in our office and much more. This also eliminates filling out registration forms and personal medical history. We have a complete list of your medications, surgeries, referring physician and other pertinent information needed to provide you excellent patient care.
During the course of your examination, the doctor and his assistant are able to document every level of the exam in order to expedite a clean and prompt insurance claim. He is able to review and compare diagnostic tests and give the results to you immediately. We can instantly send a glasses prescription to our Optical department so that our opticians can help you with frame and lens selection. We are now able to send prescriptions for medications directly to the pharmacy so that your order will be ready for you when you arrive.
A letter to your primary or secondary care physician is ready to be sent sometimes before you leave the office, allowing for up to date and consistent communications between all your health care providers.
All of us are very pleased with our EMR system, and as the administrator of Doctors Eye Institute, I am very impressed with our staff’s ease and enthusiasm in implementing and using the system from day one – even the doctors. I’m certain that we will continue to upgrade and change (Medicare is requiring EMR and Electronic prescribing in all medical offices by 2012). Our goal is to care for you in the most effective and satisfying manner and we feel that our efforts to computerize our office will help us achieve this goal.

Two things: New medications and the newer laser procedures. The new medications are easier to use. The latest laser procedures for glaucoma are very effective and in many cases they can reduce or eliminate the need for medications.
These advances can reduce the requirement for medication thereby saving the patient money. Newer laser procedures can make difficult cases much easier to treat.

2.2 mm micro-incisions and the Multi-focal lens implants such as ReSTOR and CRYSTALENS
Smaller incisions for cataract surgery means shorter healing time and more rapid vision recovery for most patients. 2.2 mm micro incisions with new ultrasound equipment for cataract surgery may also reduce the chance of rare but serious infections.
The new Multi-focal lens implants allow patients who are good candidates the opportunity to enjoy good distance and reading vision with minimal or no need for glasses following the cataract procedure.

The introduction of Botox® injections, as well as very safe injectable gels such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®, has provided very effective tools to help patients who seek to smooth out wrinkles and folds on the face instantly.
Now our patients can have dramatic and immediate correction of facial imperfections as well as lip augmentation without surgery. The effect lasts for months.
The injections produce minimal discomfort and are performed in the office. Affordability and reversibility of the effect are other major advantages over surgical procedures. We offer free consultation to those interested in using these very effective procedures to improve their appearance.

Silicone Hydrogel lens material for contact lenses. This allows up to 8 times more oxygen through the lenses than previous lens materials.
Throughout the course of the day you get significantly more oxygen to the cornea often translating into a more comfortable wearing experience with less end-of-the-day dryness and redness. Our patients love them!
