Will I still have to wear glasses after cataract surgery?

Vision correction after Cataract Surgery is typically achieved through the implantation of a permanent artificial intraocular lens. The implanted lens replaces the clouded lens which is known as a cataract. In most cases, those patients who have the traditional or monofocal type lens implanted will likely need glasses for reading or close up work. And depending on the optics of the eye, sometimes to enhance distance vision.

Newer generation lenses, sometimes referred to as “premium” lenses allow patients to have good vision at various distances and reduce dependence on glasses. In many cases these patients can avoid the need for glasses most of the time. And some patients do not wear glasses for any of their daily tasks.

Your cataract surgeon can help you achieve your personal goals by recommending a number of different types of lens implants that offer specific vision options. Many options depend on your own unique circumstances and what is most important to you about your vision. Even with all of the currently available options, you may need to wear glasses at least some of the time after the new lenses have been implanted.

Just remember that even though there is no guarantee that you will get out of wearing glasses entirely, we can generally help make your vision better for you. Depending on your circumstances and your choice of implant, most of the time we can reduce your dependence on glasses for most of what you do.

At Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute, our doctors offer all lens options, so you will get a thorough evaluation and the best recommendation for your specific vision situation in order to achieve the most effective outcome. Fortunately, you have more options now than ever before.
